Progress on Haze

Well Haze was delayed due to moving and falling out of my writing pattern, however back to work now!

At the last leg of the book and hitting the big finale, but think in rewrites I'll add an additional chapter or two to build on character interactions.

After editing a proof reading I'll probably take a short break to look back at the script for troika before starting book two.

I have decided that I'll be sticking to the four books in the series, which are coming together nicely!

Aside from that I have started some preliminary work for a later long term sci-fi project about a colony trying to survive through it's  early years.

Welp, hope all is well my few and random readers, an awful lot of whom seem to be German, which is...unexpected, but welcome!

Debating posting another Origin of Species post, we will have to see!

Also if by any chance someone stumbles across this and has any thoughts on Fintan Mac Bochra,  Donn, or Lugh from Irish myth feel free to comment. because those guys are proving a mild stumbling block.

edit: man I am just repeating variations on a theme with this blog now a days!

The Continuing Journal for the attention of what I belive are bots scanning the blogosphere

Forcing myself to keep the blogging going. I recall there is a reason for it, though I cannot recall what it  is.

Anyway, I vastly underestimated the impact of the holidays on my word count, however still roughly on target. Aim remains to have the majority of the series done before publishing in October, thinking is a quick spate of releases, means less waiting for any fans the series may acquire, means happier fans I guess!

After I complete Haze(which likely requires retitling) I will be moving onto a very long sci-fi series about a fledgling colony. Hope is it'll allow me to do much more mystery, adventure, family drama, etc... Pulp mark two, lot of stories released quickly is the plan.

Aside from that only information I have worth informing the invisible crowd is that I did finally manage to get the books I needed to complete the first book. Also new idea for the cover, it will require a lot turnips, and some serious amount of carving horrific lanterns out of them.

Well back to haze

Now a third of the way into it. Loving how nicely the characters are coming together. Now onto the first true threat to the group, and introduction of most of the rest of the cast. Still debating on what to do with the last member. It's odd knowing everything about a character, except who they are.

Beginning to think I should hire a proper artist for the cover this time. Must look into that.

Fell down on writing

Hello phantom readers. Briefly fell down at the quarter point of Haze. Confluence of events have messed up the plan. However hope to return to it tonight. Doing my best to avoid accidentally starting work on any other story. Nothing kills one story better than getting excited about another.

If by any chance any one does read this, if you know any good references on West African beliefs please tell me. Reaching a point in the story where I need better sources, or to just throw any sense of mythological accuracy to the wind.

At the moment I have kept Irish mythology true to tradition, though I have added one or two little bits where needed. Nothing terribly out there, but might see if I can clear it up in the future edits.

Haze progress

Well work on Haze has gone fantastically, about a quarter  of the way through the first draft. Almost guaranteed to hit my march deadline with ease. Looks to be about 80'000 words+ . So things are going well.

might even aim to get two books done before summer 2013.

Looking at messing about with music and animation.

Welp plans never go well

Ended up leaving the various other projects I'm supposed to work on. I  instead have ended up returning to an ancient script idea for a series that was canned long ago

The origin of species:Wohulain

Warning: I say an ass ton in this post. Didn't expect that.

Welp 6,000 words and two chapters into the next Sariana book. Can't help but wonder if I should try re-edit The Art of Blame, but down that path lies madness.

So I thought I could way to celebrate getting back to work with my first proper article type yolk. The Origin of Species, will basically be me rambling about the various species in the science fiction Universe, because I put a fair amount of thought into them and should share a little.

By the way in the future if anyone spots anything completely impossible/wrong/inconsistent in the inevitable future where I am a king amongst nerds after my lung lurk through the web, please point them out.

So first I'll start with what the fuck they are, and where the idea came from. Then I stupid amount of stuff will follow.

Origin: Like most species I came up with for the Genesis Universe the Wohulain came about really late at night on February 3rd 2005. It was that fateful night after watching a documentary called The real Da Vinci Code. After happily watching Tony Robinson explain why the book was on, for some reason a thought occurred to me. If this became a huge sensation, why couldn't I write a great series. Poor little fourteen year old me was an arrogant sod.

However I set to work late that night and wrote a very very bad and shaky overview of a great science fiction epic, I had a few ideas from daydreams in the past, but only one alien race, a  bad guy or two, and a very messy story. Soon after furiously imagining and working I had dozens of races, characters, and an absolute train wreck of a story.

So having run out of interesting ambitious new ideas, a character turned up Nalai,. from a race of reptiles whose main mark on the story is her death. Actually no that was his only mark on the story. At all. At this point the Wohulain were my least favorite race and it showed as the Universe developed.

They were the bad guys as I developed the history. A war like species. Emerging as the first galactic threat, hell they were even named the Imperium. Fully believers in a Darwinist lifestyle. The first species to obliterate a planet(Earth wanted the place out of the way). Everything made them an almost cartoon evil. Their feather like crests, their aquatic nature, all to make them more over the top threatening. What did come out of this was the foundations of what became my favorite race.

An accident of two characters, the new Nalain and Forst. Forst and obsessed mechanic who ends  up under siege and heroically holding the enemy off for months, answering a chance call of destiny. He was supposed to die early, but as I wrote him he came to be simply nice, funny and caring. Nalain, literally only invented a half of a couple for sake of diversity. Yet again she turned herself into far more. Passionate, hard working, incredibly caring, and held on to this even as many other characters fell to the seeming end of their world, she kept helping everyone she could. They turned their race about into something I actually cared about.

So this huge ass document came about detailing the whole damn species

Homeworld: Larm was a continental Pangaea with a single ocean, but an abundance of inland seas. Many national boundaries were due almost solely to the huge (still growing) mountain ranges. Larm is very similar to Earth and Diarm, with a relatively similar orbit, atmosphere, etc… Tectonic activity is frequent but avoidable. Larm has the deepest oceans of a habitable planet

Early society: Was based around a mixture of hunting done by the Women, who also protected the village from predators, and the males who built the village and farmed fungi. This system allowed the Wohulain to advance to very high levels of civilization having at least discovered electricity. However environmental cataclysm ruined cities forcing a clan based society motivated solely by a need to survive. This threat of extinction catapulted the Wohulain forward through evolution, allowing them to become incredible survivors, while at the same time collapsing any form of society for millennia until the Suol philosophy spread. The varied predators of Larm eventually pushed the Wohulain from lakes and bays back into mountains.

Mid society: Once the Suol spread throughout the Wohulain world the Wohulain re-discovered how to kill predators using hunting tactics. Similarly they began to destroy the countryside in order to remove their predator’s habitats. This allowed their societies to develop villages. However agriculture had to stay close to walled villages in fear of predators. Pilgrims traveled to other villages becoming mythical heroes for simply daring to walk the planet. These preachers destroyed theist faiths spreading the Suol methods.

Late society: With predators under control the Wohulain began a cycle of total war and absolute peace. This cycle Allowed hamlets to become tribes, tribes became kingdoms and kingdoms later turned into large nation-states. Each Nation had a similar set of Suol rules, but a very different system of government and a very different culture; this allowed the strongest to survive. Most governments were very adept at laying an extensive infrastructure as well as advancing the arts and sciences.

Dominant society: In the end The Wohulain Empire, commonly known as Imperium once it destroyed its last rivals, ruled Larm. The Imperium created a comprehensive Infrastructure, created a full range of easily accessed services. The Imperium had a great range of technology. The Wohulain had no weapons of mass destruction as they went against the Suol, additionally they made sure to protect the environmental systems when possible.

Space flight:
The Wohulain created the first large space faring vessels in order to inhabit the entire galaxy. Not being foolish they waited decades until they fully grasped traveling in bluespace and had properly built solid vessels with certain coordinates to habitable planets. Around this time they also learned mastery over occurring Aegean A.I, robotics, and simple genetic engineering.

First contact:
The first contact the Wohulain experienced was a disaster. The Wohulain sent out a colony ship through bluespace. They had minimal weapons but when they tried to make contact with the human vessel, energy signatures, common to such vessels, were mistaken for weapons charging. The vessel was almost destroyed but managed to limp back to Larm after a heroic struggle. This resulted in the Imperial expansion and ultimately Earths destruction.

Galactic war: During the vast wars that ravaged the galaxy the Wohulain Empire despite being a new galactic power proved to be the most powerful. The Empire subsumed the Dragons Confederacy They were ruthless and took control of a great portion of the galaxy and destroyed all rivals. The entire Empire began went into remission however when the Alliance remnant began to provide a better quality of life, and built a stronger more stable economy.
The Dark Age: With the Empire falling apart the Wohulain joined other factions. The chief two were the fledgling M.K and Hull. The Empire survived though and learned from its mistakes. It spent years learning terraforming techniques. The Wohulain still proved vital in the development of the Galaxy.

Latter ages: Much later the entirely Wohulain Gor Colony, proved instrumental in surrendering to the Aegean gestalt known as Aegis.

Aesthetics: They are bipedal, with a long thick tail and two arms. Their skin is smooth scaled and is low in fat deposits. They are lithe, their chest and stomach are flat and smooth. Each three jointed limb has four three jointed digits. Their oval skull has a long snout ending in a soft bump, with two large bight eyes facing forward. They have two nostrils on either side of the snout, just above a wide thin lipped mouth. They smile with their tongue between their teeth as a sign of playfulness. From their scalp to buttocks the Wohulain have a thick crest of feathers.

Skin: Wohulain skin is comprised of fine smooth scales. These are individually pigmented and phototropic. The pigments response to light is poisoned by male hormones. Once mature this skin might not change for as long as thirty years. Cells on the shoulders, chest and cheek produce vitamin D in sunlight. Pores on the feet exist in order to cleanse the body in case of severe poison.

Most Wohulain organs are capable of completely regenerating from damage if correctly taken care of and treated naturally. These are mostly evolutionary development from the varied natural threats and their early diet.

Respiratory: The Wohulain have two lungs consisting of sixteen chambers which can be sealed with mucous plugs if punctured. These contain many alveoli for gas exchange. In addition they have a remaining third lung from an amphibious ancestry. The Wohulain feathers extract O2 from the water and transfer it to this third twenty chambered lung for underwater breathing.

Circulatory: The Wohulain heart is four chambered with thick walls. Their heart beats at 45 B.P.M. It works on a dual circuit with a hepatic portal vein. They have the usual blood composition of red blood cells containing hemoglobin, platelets, white blood cells and blood clotting chemicals. Blood pressure in the throat makes the throat incredibly vulnerable and meaning a wound to the throat is always near fatal, and an aimed blow to the throat often requires hospitalization. Their blood clots quite slowly, making blood loss fatal if medical attention isn’t immediate. The lymph system is very efficient at redistributing extra-cellular fluid, preventing swelling, and has numerous nodes for maturing white blood cells.

Nervous: The Wohulain have the usual peripheral and central nervous system with a large nerve cluster at the base of the tail. The brain is divided into four quarters with very high levels of inter-communication. The spinal column is heavily shielded by layers of bone and fluid, even in case this is penetrated the nerves disperse much earlier than necessary to limit the chance of paralysis. Paralysis is further reduced due to the common phenomenon of the tail cluster, responsible for swift reactions, slowly taking control of the legs motor nerves. Nerve cells are generally quite short encouraging the signal to make more jumps making for fast reactions. The brain itself splits functionality by having signals from organs pass through instinct centers first, sensory centers next (encouraging more information to be found), memory centers, than the reason center, finally ending at the area responsible for remembering people and triggering emotions. This system encourages survival to take precedent over emotional wishes. Specific sensory information moves in the opposite direction, in order for it to log past memory, however this frequently causes Wohulain to freeze in moments of emotional conflict.

Digestion: Wohulain break all food down in three stomachs, the first being mechanical, and second being chemical, the third being used to convert certain indigestible chemicals. Their intestines are unusually coiled around their three kidneys and liver, all these organs being kept in by thick walls of muscle. The first stage of the intestine removes any poisons for the liver to break down. The second stage removes nutrients which then pass immediately through the kidneys. The final has all the waste products compressed and stored in the colon.

Endocrine: Wohulain don't a specific period for puberty. Endocrine organs are in a line down the spine. They have the unusual tendency to constantly release hormone at a steady rate, with very few hormonal cycles taking place. Trigger events and diet can cause a splurge of hormone, with the opposite also being true. These Hormone splurges can lead to unusual mental states such as depression or irrational love, or cause physical change such as increased fat or muscle, or changing pigment patterns. This can often give the impression of mental instability to other species.

Reproduction: Wohulain are two gendered with the only genetic difference being the secondary growth hormone. In females erocane causes the development of the egg canal, an increase in fat deposits, which due to the organs location focuses on the hips and stomach, and a change in how the hip bone forms in order to ease the laying of eggs. In males the hormone, kanth causes the sperm canal develops, their single testicle, a poisoning of pigments preventing bright scale or feather colors, and the destruction of vocal cords giving male Wohulain a distinctive grating rasp.

Structure: The Support structure of the Wohulain body makes up for the relative simplicity of other systems. The skeleton features a remarkable abundance of bones which function to reinforce the main structure. The skull is made of four fused segments. The round chest is comprised of a lattice instead of ribs which stretches over a rubber like structure. The muscles are designed to deal with large amounts of exercise by having dump pits for lactic acid to slow aches and stiffness. The scaled skin is adept at reflecting heat, but poor at heat retention, the small scales create an incredibly smooth surface ideal for swimming.

Senses: The Wohulain developed near perfect sight capable of intense adjustment of the lens, and range the spectrum visible. However they have a very shallow range of tastes and smells. Their hearing is relatively average but has a limited range, however as Wohulain age, ear wax molds the feathers around the ear into a funnel, which does improve their hearing. They have a large abundance of touch receptors, but few heat sensors. Balance is highly developed, and reliant on both the tail and fluid canals in the hips and ears. In addition the center of gravity is kept low by the increased density of leg joints Certain Wohulain feathers are capable of picking up vibrations passing through their surrounding medium. This makes up for poor hearing and smell which only work in the atmosphere, Wohulain can use this sense in water and atmosphere. Using this Wohulain can triangulate the location of fish underwater or, the path of objects moving through the air.

Homeostasis: Is generally reliant on external heat. Aside from this feathers trap heat pockets and blood vessels contract. In even colder conditions the Hereos chambers burn carbohydrates and other chemicals for heat. This denatures enzymes in and can permanently damage fertility.

Healing: Wohulain healing capabilities are unbalanced. While the body is resilient to damage, it is slow to heal. In addition blood is slow to clot making them more vulnerable to deep wounds. However while healing is slow almost all injuries can be recovered from given time.

Aging: Wohulain age steadily growing to their peak by 31, and then dying naturally from heart or liver failure by approximately 64. As Wohulain age their melanin gradually disappears leaving elderly Wohulain seem ghostly. While all bodily systems begin to wear out, the heart, liver and lungs tend to stop first.

Movement: Wohulain are thought of as having three main modes of movement, swimming instinctively using their legs and tail together, walking upright with a generally aggressive gait, or moving on all fours for speed and flexibility.

Culture: Wohulain culture embraced diversity and had stories ranging in style from what were known as friendship epics to life tales. Art was incredibly detailed and skilled. Sculpture was uncommon and reserved as a way of preserving a famous soldier or scientist. In old age when a Wohulain was long past their prime it was common for them to spend their very last years working on something for the future generations to remember them by which would be logged and preserved for safety. Contemporary Imperial culture promotes life more than any other nation, in part due to their slave trade. Their class system is a network rather than a hierarchy promoting all pursuits. Frequently perceived as wildly sexually deviant and morally grey the Empire still shows classic signs of Suol culture. These include orgies, rites of passage in hostile environments, and use of clothing to mark achievement.

Religion: The Wohulain deified natural predators and Anthropomorphized emotion early on. The longest lasting religion is referred to as the golem myth. However the Suol shattered these proto-religions. The few surviving theocracies were the first to be destroyed by the Suol’s followers. The Suol was never a religion but the sign pointing the way to Utopia. The Wohulain accepted it was not an easy path and tried to minimize any inevitable death that resulted from the Suol. While it was not forbidden to live outside of the Suol it was very difficult due to its nature. The Suol is both an effect of the Wohulain and an affect.

Gender balance: The two genders were both well balanced, however in many cultures females took on the services, protective and administrative roles, while males took on educational, research, and civic development.

Racial balance: A number of Wohulain races exist. Predominant is the crested, water dwelling Wohulain who began the Imperium. As nations were founded by races, and nations were in many cases destroyed the other three races are always a minority, especially in the Mahi-Kahd. Races exist without a crest, with thorny backs, and other minor variants.

Notes: No Wohulain culture ever created the spoon. The Wohulain only wore clothes as a result of their position, title or honors they have won, they only wore underwear until the age of fourteen. The concept of clothing was however very common in societies with colder climates. Wohulain history is studded with vigilantes.

Developmental: For five years a Wohulain child is learns the basics of living often raised by the entire community. The child develops a basic understanding of the world and people. In the next five years the child becomes dependent on another as a guardian whom they typically begin to mirror. They easily become jealous of others who their parents/guardians show attention to. As with other species when they reach the teenage years maturity encourages them to rebel, develop and learn to question.

Psychology: The main need for a Wohulain is to compete and develop a complete and accurate self-image. As a consequence Wohulain reach their zenith fast and struggle to maintain this level of being. On the whole Wohulain avoid forming prejudices. They are fully confident in themselves and find such prejudice foolish and ignorant, as well as a risky endevour. Often the Wohulain trait of accepting limitation is seen as pessimism or depression, when in fact the Wohulain see these things as a simple fact. Most Wohulain only develop large social circles after their late twenties

Emotions: One of the strongest emotions for the Wohulain is the need and obligation to care and protect anything too weak to do so for themselves, needed in order for them to mind the young. As a result there is little historical mistreatment of animals, people, children or ecology, when in the care of a Wohulain. War is of course an exception. The next is a sense of honor which holds them to their word and keeps them from breaking their morals, or betraying bonds of loyalty. The most important emotion to a Wohulain is to have someone to trust, be loyal to and love, this is a consequence of earlier ambitions having run their course. This is vital to their wellbeing as they get older.

Stability: While young Wohulain psychology does not suffer from breakdowns, depressions or a complete sense of purposeless. When a Wohulain loses anything of great value to they will still seek some small thing to keep going, no matter how small, or how detrimental an obsession it is. However once a Wohulain does lose their mind it is gone for good. This makes most Wohulain personality disorders intensely destructive.

Learning Ability: Wohulain focus on objectives and rarely relent until it is made clearly impossible. This ensures by the time they either succeed or fail they have learnt perfect lessons.

Disorders: Wohulain suffer from psychosis, intermediate anxiety, and emotional personality disorders. Psychiatric disorders have a high prevalence, many having either an overt, or a covert manifestation. The three most common are: Garaton's which is caused by a hormone imbalance resulting in ferocious temper, megalomania, and a feeling of invulnerability. Thrace's which is caused by a lack of specific brain chemicals, and is characterized by a complete lack of empathy, coupled with an increased ability to understand and manipulate social groups and more vivid sensations. Bara-bara is characterized by a desire for pain and negative emotions, resulting from a neuron cluster being positioned in the wrong quarter of the brain, there are two consequences to this, some seek out situations that will cause pain and distress, others go out to cause it.

Family: The Wohulain have no loyalty to bonds of blood only bonds of friendship and love. A Wohulain has a much more complicated sense of family which can be summarized as ‘those you rely on’.

So that's a hell of an info dump so I won't post a timeline. Hope it is a somewhat interesting read!
